People with learning disabilities, autistic people, families and supporters will stage a 5 day protest at government and NHS England about the ongoing detention and abuse of people with learning disabilities and autistic people in Assessment and Treatment Units (ATUs).
It has been 8 years since the government and NHS England made promises to provide homes instead of hospitals for people with learning disabilities and autistic people. Since the shocking abuse in Winterbourne View, promise after promise has been broken and there are still around 2500 people stuck in ATUs and there is not enough community support being developed and private hospitals are thriving and growing.
We have seen another undercover investigation by Panorama that showed the abuse, torture and neglect of people in a private ATU. There have been endless news stories about the abuse and neglect that many people experience in ATUs up and down the country, yet promises by government and NHS England have been diluted and not sufficient to ensure that people are safe and will get the support they need in their communities. There is now an investigation into this by the Joint Human Rights Committee.
